Background

GROVE was born out of my own frustration in keeping my lawn green and healthy.

Struggling with confusing and contradictory online research I sought to gain more insight into a process I felt was more difficult than it should be.

This section covers the industrial design process I went through to complete this project. For the full write up of the digital process please clip the button below.

I always start my process with a mood board filled with carefully selected images. I try to stay away from existing products in the same field or sector and focus on the end product’s goals and environment.

Ideating through Prototyping

The habit I usually fall into is relying too heavily on sketching, renders and CAD to validate designs. For this project I wanted to turn that habit on its head.

My habit when creating a CAD model is designing things too small. In order to avoid this for GROVE I prototyped early and often. Below are some of the most important 3D prints I created using a high quality SLS printer to validate size, general shape and feel. I also had the opportunity to use a PolyJet J55 full color printer to test colorways and final surfacing.
